How Does Being Outside the Body Norm Affect Body Image Issues?

We know that black and brown, queer, fat, and old bodies that don’t fit inside the white, thin, young, cisgender, able-bodied ideal are seen as problems to fix by our culture. A part of us learns to objectify ourselves from an early age so that it seems normal to hate our bodies. Pressures from our culture (media, family, friends) often intersect with traumatic experiences, such as bullying, racial oppression, sexual assault, and have a direct impact on how you feel about your body. 

So much of our body image work together will be grief work. We also help clients learn to put their anger where it belongs to their body and onto the systems that tell them that in order for their body to have value it needs to look a certain way. 


All bodies deserve respect and care regardless of age, size, color, ability.
